Obituary for Thaddeus W. Smith, Jr.

Thaddeus W. Smith Jr., was born on October 20, 1921 in Forth Worth Texas to the late Thaddeus W. Smith Sr. and Emma Lee Smith. He was the older brother to Carmen Smith Moore. On Sunday August 18, Thaddeus was called to eternal rest.

Thaddeus graduated from Phillis Wheatley High School and upon his graduation he continued his education at Ft. Sam Houston University.

During his marvelous life Thaddeus received many accolades. One he was most proud of was Citizen of the year award from Stephen Paccione, chairman of the Lower Gwynedd Board of Supervisors in 2015.

Thaddeus was a living, breathing, piece of Lower Gwynedd with plenty of stories made up from his very life that was well lived.

Thaddeus believed in giving commendations to others, yet received many of his own.

Thaddeus, was born in Texas, he came to Penllyn with an Army friend while both were serving in World War II. It was then he met and married his lovely bride Irene Ruth Lee. Long time residents will remember Irene’s father, Norris Lee, who was at that time the first and only African American police officer in Lower Gwynedd Township.

Thaddeus’ four daughters, four grand children and 16 great grands still live in the area and benefit from their parents leadership in the civil rights struggle to desegregate Lower Gwynedd Elementary School in the early 1950’s.

Throughout Thaddeus nearly 98 years of his wonderful life, he was heavily involved with the community through many various groups. As a member of Optimist international, a nationwide service group where he remained a life member. He also remained active in VFW and served on Montgomery County Community College board of trustees for seven years.

Thaddeus has been active in local politics for decades, including representing the country as a delegate of RNC in 2000 and officially declared the convention closed.

After a 30 year career working for the Department of Defense, he retired in 1981 and worked in Wissahickon School District for another Decade. He was still receiving visits from former students.

He especially enjoyed family time with his Grands and Great Grands.

Thaddeus is survived by his loving Daughters, Ledley Smith, Lynn Johnson, Lea Smith, and Lauren Ellison, Grandchildren, Oliver Chamberlain, (Angela) , Olin Chamberlain (Michelle), Kira Ellison, Marques Johnson, (Ronda), Kevin Parker Jr., and his Sister-in-law Ruby Wilson. 17 Great grands and 3 Great GreatGrands. Also he leaves to cherish his loving memory, He was pre-deceased by his loving wife Irene L Smith, Sister Carmen Moore, two sister-in-laws, Charlotte Obey, Otelia Gaskins, son-in-law Kevin C. Parker Sr. and grandson Ondray B. Parker.
