Obituary for Grace R. Bergman

Grace Ricci Bergman was the oldest living Female Marine veteran in the State of Pennsylvania and died on October 22, 2019. Grace was 100 years young on December 3, 2015, and as a special gift her nieces and nephews had a plaque placed at the Women in Military Service for America Memorial in Arlington, Virginia in her honor. She was an honorary member of the Marine Corps League, Valley Forge Detachment #312 and the Womens’ Marines.

Grace Ricci Bergman was born on December 3, 1915 in Philadelphia and her family moved soon after to Lansdale, PA where she grew up. She was the third of ten children. She graduated Hatfield High school in 1933 with honors. Just after her graduation her family moved back into Philadelphia. She went to Strayer Business School and then worked in a Real Estate office as a receptionist and typist.

As a civic minded new Philadelphian, Grace established a club of young women called Colo Pongo which means Circle of Friends. The club collected food and other donations for needy people who were affected by the Depression and helped them in any other ways they could.

During this period, Grace met Fred Bergman and they became engaged on December 7, 1941, of all days! Both of them knew that Fred would be drafted and they decided to wait until after the war was over to marry. Fred served in the Army in Africa and Europe.

As the war went on, she decided that she needed to do more. She didn't tell her parents and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, serving from August 4, 1943 until December 7,1945. After boot camp at Camp Lejeune, NC she was assigned to headquarters Marine Corps in Arlington, VA and was a Staff Sergeant over a large office of Marines maintaining personnel records of the Marines serving all over the world. Her parents were extremely proud of Grace and her pilot brother, Vince, who was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross.

When she was discharged from the Marine Corps, Grace finally married her long time fiancée, Fred. She became a home maker and had a daughter, Margaret. Grace and Fred enjoyed 46 years together. Fred died in 1994.
Relatives and friends are invited to her Funeral Mass on Monday, October 28, 2019 at 10:30 AM at Peter Becker Community Chapel, 800 Maple Avenue, Harleysville, PA 19438.
