Mary Frances Ashton “Sookie” of Lansdale, PA, formerly of Ambler, PA, (Gwynedd Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center) went home to the Lord on January 4, 2018. Mary was born in Ambler on April 4, 1924. Her parents were the late John Stewart and Martha Ashton.
She attended Ambler High School. She was employed as a Nurses’ Aid at Norristown State Hospital and Silverstream Nursing Home. She also worked at Narco Avionics in Fort Washington, PA.
Mary enjoyed crocheting, reading, word books and spending time with her grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Mary loved listening to music, especially Lou Rawls. Mary spent her retirement years as a Foster Grandparent at the Artman Lutheran Home in Ambler, PA. She was rewarded in Recognition and Appreciation for 10 years of Outstanding Service as a Foster Grandparent in 2005.
Mary was a member of Mount Zion AME Church in Norristown, PA. She was preceded in death by her former husband, George Lewis Ashton; three brothers, Perry, James, Robert and two sisters, Laura and Emily.
Mary is survived by five children; four daughters, Deborah Bounds (William), Sheila Ashton, Denise Cooke and Velma Coleman and one son, Harold T. Williams (Rosalyn). She also leaves 14 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
