Obituary for Leroy Barksdale

Leroy Barksdale, 71, of Wayne, PA, passed away on June 16, 2017 at his home surrounded by his family. Leroy was born in Philadelphia, PA on March 15, 1946 to the late Percy and Lucy (Farmer) Barksdale. He served his country with the U.S. Air Force. Leroy worked for the U.S. Post Office for 25 years as a Postal Clerk. Leroy enjoyed traveling, movies, baseball and all of the arts. He traveled Europe extensively with his favorite destination being Paris; which he visited over 10 times. Leroy attended the Toronto Film Festival since the early 80's never missing a year until his health prevented him from attending and would watch 4-5 movies a day while there. He supported the arts regionally with subscriptions to the Philadelphia Orchestra, Walnut Street Theater and Opera Philadelphia. Additionally he was a member of various museums including the Barnes, Philadelphia Museum of Art and even volunteered at the Sanderson Museum in Chaddsford, PA.

In addition to his interest in the arts, he was an avid artist, with more than 200 pieces in his collection, including paintings and sculptures. He was also a self-taught amateur musician, playing the drums, harmonica and didgeridoo; but would also pick up any instrument and give it a go. More importantly than any of those interests was the impact he had on the lives of everyone that he touched. He made the post office feel like a place of meeting, where you not only mailed packages and purchased stamps, but came to talk about sports, music and your family. He made everyone that he talked to feel good and important. When you left his presence you always were better having been in it. The lives that Leroy impacted the greatest were those of his family and friends. He was a devoted, caring and giving father, brother, uncle, cousin and grandfather, husband/friend and his death leaves a void that will never be filled.

Leroy is survived by his children: Jamal David Barksdale (Shannon Storm) and Jeanette Davis; four grandchildren: Kareem and Tyreek Barksdale, Fatima Ford, William Davis, Jr.; a sister Elizabeth Milner; a former wife Naomi Barksdale; 3 nieces: Antoinette Barksdale, Yvette Minter, Laveena Barksdale; 2 nephews: Darnell and Mark Barksdale. Funeral Services will be held privately.
