Obituary for Lauren S. Bolen

Lauren S. Bolen, 58, of Blue Bell, PA died on June 22, 2017 at her home after a courageous battle with breast cancer. The loving wife of Michael Bolen, Lauren was born in New Haven, CT on June 18, 1959 to Elizabeth (Borgerson) and the late Donald Stevens.

An accomplished swimmer through high school, Lauren swam varsity at Yale University where she received her bachelor degree in 1981. After graduating from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania with an MBA, Lauren worked for Booz Allen as a healthcare consultant before joining Merck's US Headquarters in West Point, PA in 1988.

She rose from a marketing analyst to Vice President of Customer Marketing and Economic Affairs in Merck's Vaccine Division. Lauren was especially proud of their campaign to educate public health officials of the importance of vaccinating children for chicken pox and broadening coverage for Merck's Varivax vaccine. Varivaxhas nearly eradicated chicken pox deaths among children. Lauren held a variety of other posts, including product manager for the anti-infective Primaxin; director of the business development group which oversaw the joint-venture agreement that eventually created Astra- Merck Pharmaceuticals; and was head of Merck's Opthalmics business.

Ms. Bolen left Merck in 2002 to become a successful pharmaceutical marketing consultant for clients that included Pfizer, Astra Zeneca, Sunovian, Teva, J&J, Wyeth, among many others. "Lauren was a strategic thinker – above and beyond expectations. A perfect consultant who could synthesize data into meaningful and actionable recommendations," said Anita Bhala, a former Merck manager and consultant with Health Industries Research Companies.

Leaving Merck also allowed Lauren to spend more time with her young family. She often served as team manager for her children's busy sports schedule. Her husband, Michael says, "Lauren had this amazing way of being able to defuse tensions among parents complaining that their child wasn't getting enough playing time.

International diplomacy has nothing on resolving disputes on travel sports teams. She was the 'mother confessor' ". People sought her out for advice." Bolen also served on the Board of Directors of Living Beyond Breast Cancer, and volunteered for Community Cupboard of Ambler.

Along with her husband Michael and mother Elizabeth, she is survived by her children Kathryn, Alexander, and Lillian Bolen, her mother, siblings Lisa Stevens Cantu, Tracey Stevens Richard, and Todd Stevens.

Relatives and friends are invited to her Memorial Service on Thursday, July 6, 2017 at 11 AM at First Presbyterian Church of Ambler, 4 S. Ridge Ave., Ambler, PA 19002.

Interment will be Private.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Lauren's name can be made to Mattie Dixon Community Cupboard in Ambler, First Presbyterian Church of Ambler or Living Beyond Breast Cancer.
